Following our tradition to gather during the summer school break, we hope that many of you are able to join us to celebrate the successes and accomplishments of the patients and their family members of our surgery program. As always, the Reunion is a chance to share many accomplishments: Our pediatric epilepsy surgery program continues to improve the lives of many children who suffer from epilepsy and the lives of their relatives. But we could not do that without the contribution of many, including the parent ambassadors who are always there to support the families in the hospital and during the complex epilepsy surgery decision making process. This year we are adding two exciting workshops to our program. One is dedicated to patients who have had a vagus nerve stimulation VNS implanted for the control of the seizures. This program will provide the unique opportunity for the caregivers of children with VNS to share their experience with a team of neuro-stimulation experts.

Print Overview Reactive attachment disorder is a rare but serious condition in which an infant or young child doesn’t establish healthy attachments with parents or caregivers. Reactive attachment disorder may develop if the child’s basic needs for comfort, affection and nurturing aren’t met and loving, caring, stable attachments with others are not established. With treatment, children with reactive attachment disorder may develop more stable and healthy relationships with caregivers and others.
Treatments for reactive attachment disorder include psychological counseling, parent or caregiver counseling and education, learning positive child and caregiver interactions, and creating a stable, nurturing environment. Symptoms Reactive attachment disorder can start in infancy. There’s little research on signs and symptoms of reactive attachment disorder beyond early childhood, and it remains uncertain whether it occurs in children older than 5 years.

There is no simple answer for this, as each situation is different. Dating is sometimes awkward…. Although it is a good idea to discuss epilepsy with your date, it is reasonable to wait until you feel comfortable and develop a level of trust with that person. How should the first conversation go? The first discussion should be simple but informative. Talk about the basics on what to do when a seizure happens.
People feel they are able to cope with situations better when they know what to expect. And this may occur in a gradual way over days or weeks. People are usually interested in finding out what happens during a seizure, and real friends understand. Unfortunately, sometimes people do not cope well when finding out that the person they are dating has a health condition such as epilepsy.
This can be due to a variety of reasons including not knowing anything about the condition, or being ignorant ill-informed about what it is like to live with epilepsy, or being worried about what to do if their partner does have a seizure whilst on a date. It is helpful to let your date know what it is like to have epilepsy and that having epilepsy does not mean you cannot live a normal life.
Caring can involve a number of skills and can be both rewarding and exhausting. Who is a carer? A carer is someone who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of a health condition, disability or frailty, and who would not be able to manage without this help. All the care they give is unpaid. The term ‘carer’ does not mean someone who is in paid employment as a care worker.
Not all carers are adults:

Epilepsy and Your Teen’s Sleep Coping with a teenager can be difficult for any parent, but teens with epilepsy pose additional problems. What if your teen won’t take his medicine? Will he be safe driving? Will she put herself at risk of having more seizures by drinking or taking drugs? Parents don’t have complete control over their teens, as much as they may wish to.
And letting your teen have greater independence is crucial for healthy development. Once your teen goes away to college or moves out of the home, you’re going to have to have faith that she can take care of herself. The teenage years are the in-between time, when you must give up some control of your child’s health so he or she can step in and begin taking charge.
Epilepsy and Changes in Your Teen Adolescence is a volatile time both socially and biologically. A lot of profound changes are taking place. It’s especially important that once a child hits puberty, he or she go back to the doctor for a check-up. Yearly checkups are a great way to stay on top of problems before they develop in a growing teenager.
It’s possible that the physical changes of puberty may warrant an adjustment in your teen’s medication.

Add to Wishlist Install Epilepsy Journal is an app which allows you to quickly document daily variables concerning your epilepsy, such as seizure triggers, types etc. The information you provide is organized into easy to read graphs which allow for quick visualization of your individual epilepsy trends and patterns overtime. This app can serve as a valuable communication aid, by allowing you to generate a straightforward and professional report which can be shared with your physicians.
In general, we hope that this App will allow you to: It can have a relapsing, remitting, and unpredictable course. Whether your epilepsy is mild or severe, refractory or controlled, it is critical to objectively and consistently monitor certain factors such as number of seizures, seizure triggers, AED drug or ketone levels, and other vital information. Keeping a detailed epilepsy journal will allow you to quickly notice any changes to your epilepsy, as well as provide you with impartial evidence as to whether your epilepsy treatment is truly effective or losing effectiveness over time.
Our daughter Olivia is our inspiration for this app. Olivia has a refractory and severe epilepsy which began at age 1. Although the journal was helpful in allowing us to objectively monitor the effectiveness of her epilepsy treatments, it was very time consuming and tended to be disorganized; As well, the hundreds of pages of notes did not help us when it became most critical to quickly and accurately summarize months worth of seizure history, for example during emergency hospital visits or follow up appointments.
During our experience navigating the neurology health care system, we found accurate and effective communication to be a key factor in successfully working with doctors and achieving ideal seizure control. We created this app as a free and simple way to monitor your epilepsy; track trends and patterns, objectively determine effectiveness of seizure treatment overtime, and improve success of doctors appointments.
